Global Departure Update
Looking at data up to 26 June 2023:
- Global departures keep rising at an average of 127.7k a day, 4.3% above 2019 levels (Chart 1).
- The China Dragon Boat Festival saw tourism numbers above pre-Covid levels (Chart A). However,the 10.4% increase from 2019 levels fell short of the 19.1% increase seen for the May Day holiday. Moreover, spending at the festival was lower than in 2019 (-5.1%) while it was on par with 2019 at the May Day holiday (Chart B). Departures across Asia increased +1.2% WoW, led by Shanghai airport (+4.6% WoW).
- European departures continued to trend higher. American departures remain comparatively lax, with the weakest increase through 2022 and 2023 (Chart 2).
